Who We Are
Our Values... And Some Branding
I’m writing from my dining room table this week. Some hockey on in the background for white noise and too many beverages on the table around my laptop. I’m feeling good.
This week has been all about our identity as a business. Clarifying the core services our business will offer is one thing but defining our branding has been a bit more difficult. I’ve spent a lot of time digging into the services our company will offer recently and this week needed to be more about who we are. It’s been a difficult but necessary question to answer.
I’ve been learning a lot about branding in an effort to articulate our business to potential clients as best as possible. It was good to sit down early on and write a first draft of our who we are statement, but the learning and work we continue to do to launch has informed this statement more than anything. This reminds me of the importance of a favorite adage:
Lead with action, supplement with learning.
It’s interesting to think about how much of our business identity is dictated by our team values and how much is dictated by the clients we’re attempting to serve.
🌟 Bossy Bosses 🌟
“I share a desk and responsibilities with a coworker. My coworker is a very technologically challenged, but she tries to keep up. She has worked at the job much longer than I have, so my boss goes to her for particular tasks that I may not have the experience to do (I’ve only worked at this job for four months). Recently he asked my coworker for login info for a business account so he can order supplies. For two hours, between other high-priority tasks, she tried to find the login info but can’t get the computer to work or sift through her many, many confusing sticky notes. My boss keeps coming over and asking for the login during this whole time. Three hours later, my boss loudly directs my coworker to figure it out immediately or have me do it “since she doesn’t know what she’s doing." This was such a classic bossy boss move, putting my coworker down in front of me and then forcing me into an emotionally charged situation where I’m now the villain only because I know how to find a saved password on a computer!”
I’ve had to remind myself a few times this past week that the branding decisions we make for our launch are not forever and we have the opportunity to adjust as we go. This freedom allows us to tailor service packages and pricing to reflect the current circumstances of our sprouting company as well as tweak our messaging as we become more focused in our values and our efforts. This should all have a positive impact on our ability to attract and secure clients while we get our footing which is so exciting!
Wishing you all some fall fun this week. I had a blast at a nearby haunted house this weekend. Ahhh!
With spookiness,
Will
P.S. The name Will Barnes is an alias. As mentioned in my first post, I can’t leave my current job until I have another comparable stream of income and I’d like to prevent my boss from firing me first. Please don’t seek out my real identity. I will reveal myself when the time is right.
