Garden Unit Media, Sales Training, and Internet Experts
P- P- P- Progress!
We’re back! And it’s Monday!
I hope you’ve got a piping hot beverage to start your day.
Today I’m writing from my office-that-I-hope-isn’t-my-office-for-much-longer.
On the docket this week is Garden Unit Media, Sales Training, and Internet Experts. Plus, this week’s Bossy Bosses segment at the end of this post.
You might’ve already noticed, but I also gave the Bossless Blog a cool new flow that I’m excited for you to experience.
Let's dive in. 😁

Garden Unit Media
This week was an exciting one! We launched the Garden Unit Media social media accounts. A big step. You can check us out on instagram here.
The ratio of learning to action skewed towards learning this week and primarily, I’ve been learning about sales.
We’re ready to start marketing our services and reaching out to potential clients directly so I’m working to beef up my ability to sell our services. The task feels daunting, but I’ve tried to break it up by
Oh, did I mention that we already have our first client?! My brother and I are stoked to be providing our mother, a badass literacy expert, with our services in an effort to grow her business.
We’ll be helping her grow The Literacy Spark, a private tutoring business and the LLC through which she will offer consultation services, speaking services, training courses for teachers, and digital products designed to help both teachers and parents teach children how to read more effectively.
Our team at Garden Unit Media will help grow The Literacy Spark by expanding its digital presence, boosting community engagement with social media accounts and digital resources, and building a marketing strategy to supercharge growth and revenue.
✨ You can learn more about The Literacy Spark here.

Sales Training
Sales. It’s got a reputation, and not a great one. I’ve waded into the world of sales training after realizing that I need to get good at selling our services, and fast.
The idea of sales has always seemed so icky to me. I’ve associated it with manipulating people into buying stuff they don’t need with money they don’t have. But, that’s generally not the case... generally.
Sure, there are con artists everywhere. You can find them all over the internet, on the street selling knock-off watches, and even at family functions. (You know, that one uncle who always tries to get you to buy into his pyramid scheme every year at the family Christmas party?)
But I’ve learned that you also need sales skills to sell customers something they need for a reasonable price that they can afford.
We’re overwhelmed with products and sales pitches now more than ever and it takes real sales skills (and marketing skills, but more on that next week) to cut through all the noise.
High-quality marketing and a great sales funnel is a good start, but an articulate, empathetic sales interaction is necessary to close the deal.
Youtube has been an incredible resource for me throughout this process. If you’re reading this and are trying to boost your skills in sales, I would recommend Alex Hormozi’s channel.
He’s got a bit of a bootstraps rep and the thumbnails are kind of aggressive, but he provides very actionable (and free!) instruction on building a business and becoming very good at selling your products or services. You can check it out here.
Internet Experts
In the past, sort of like the sales thing, it felt difficult to identify who on the internet has something valuable to offer and who’s full of shit.
I’ve been thinking about this because I’ve been watching such a high volume of educational marketing and sales themed youtube videos and it’s thrown my algorithm way out of whack.
Now the targeted ads that pop up on my personal social media accounts are all people yelling at me about how I can increase my sales by 1000000% and make millions of dollars overnight by taking their course, buying their software, etc.
I guess that’s what you get for trying to get a marketing degree for free on youtube.
I just can’t believe, statistically, that all of these people have a product or service that would A) actually give me results and B) do so at a reasonable cost-benefit ratio.
So how do I distinguish between the ones with something valuable to offer and the ones who want to rip me off? It feels increasingly difficult. Especially now, when marketing strategy and editing technology have become so advanced.
I wish I had a fool-proof bullshit detector for this one, but it seems the most effective way to protect yourself from empty internet “experts” is to really think critically about what you consume or purchase on the internet. UGH.
Have you had any experiences where you drank the koolaid? If so, how long did it take you to realize what you were consuming was bullshit? Shoot me an email with your experience and I’ll share it in next week’s post.
🌟 BOSSY BOSSES 🌟
This week: Bossy bosses who love the patriarchy.
“I have had a few bosses in my working life. All male except for one. The common traits among the poor bosses were bullying and the assertion that men are smarter than women and should keep their place (including not advancing in company). All subtle, mind you, but not far below the surface.
One of the most insulting bosses laughed at me when I requested to take a class to learn new skills. Laughed at me!
I have been my own boss for the last 14 years. If you laugh at me now, I walk out the door.”
I hope you like the new look of the Bossless Blog. I would love to hear any and all feedback! Feel free to reach out on social media or shoot me an email with your thoughts.
Wishing you a productive week.
With warmth,
Will
P.S. The name Will Barnes is an alias. As mentioned in my first post, I can’t leave my current job until I have another comparable stream of income and I’d like to prevent my boss from firing me first. Please don’t seek out my real identity. I will reveal myself when the time is right.
